Sweetie Flyer Removal

We are organizing an effort to remove all those Sweetie flyers we all posted over the last several months. Now the search is over, it's time to remove those flyers.

If you have some time this weekend, please join us on Saturday, @ 10am, to help remove flyers. Details are below:

Date: Saturday, April 10
Time: 10am
Location: Meet at Burger King on Silver Hill Road (strip mall on the corner of Penn Ave & Silver Hill)

Volunteers will meet at Burger at 10am and given areas of town to concentrate, to ensure all the flyers are removed.

Please RSVP to Stephanie at sktulip@gmail.com.

Thank you for all your help!

Sweetie has passed away

We just went out and identified her body. Sweetie was hit by a car on Erie in SE DC. We are heartbroken over this, as we were SO CLOSE. We had a time and place that we were pretty sure we could trap her in the enclosure trap.

She is happily playing at the Rainbow Bridge with her dear friend, Buddy, who went to the Rainbow Bridge mid-March. Thank you for all your efforts everyone!

ANOTHER sightiing

One of our volunteers saw Sweetie with her very own eyes! Hanging out at the Senior Wellness Center on the corner of Alabama and 30th SE in DC. It's a shame our girl is so shy, otherwise we could have had her.

We have our enclosure trap out and placed, with volunteers monitoring, so cross your fingers that she goes in this time (we are using a different trap now since she wouldn't go in the other one).

Desperately need help to bring our girl home!!!

another new sighting!

Sweetie has just been sighted on Insey Street in District Heights . We have someone headed out right now to check it out!

Sighting CONFIRMED!

It appears that Miss Sweetie can't decide whether she enjoys Maryland or DC more, and goes back and forth. The sighting from yesterday was confirmed last night, and it appears she shows herself at that location on and off! We also think we may have found her DC den, so we will keep an eye on that and hopefully bring her home soon!!!

potential new sighting

Someone reported seeing Sweetie in SE DC running up 30th street by Naylor Garden Apartments at about 9:00pm last night.

We have a wonderful volunteer out making sure all the local businesses have fliers and setting up a feeding station so we can bring her home!

We also received word t hat she may have been INSIDE the library at Old Silver Hill Road about 2 weeks ago, so she seems to enjoy the Marlboro Pike area!

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

We need outreach help again, please see the post directly below, from earlier today, for information!

Efforts to find Sweetie continue--join us!

Thanks to volunters and the tracker for their help today! Our girl is still in the same area, sounds like the scent was pretty fresh.

Also thanks to volunteers for their flyering efforts today. We've had several recent sightings--the last on March 10--and the map will be updated with those shortly!

Weekend plans are underway--check back for updates!

IN GREAT NEED OF HELP!!!

Hi, everyone,

We know where our girl is hanging out and why (near Forestville Road and Suitland Road), but we are having trouble with manpower. We need volunteers for:

1. setting up and monitoring feeding stations (especially an early morning shift)
2. responding to sighting calls (which would generally involve looking for signs of Sweetie, talking to people in the area, and setting up a feeding station, if necessary--it most likely will not involve CATCHING Sweetie, since she's afraid of people)
3. fliering--we need help even if it's outside of the fliering events

If you would like to help but can not help on site, please consider a monetary donation. Since we're bringing in professional help (with both the tracker an a trapper), we need to raise funds to pay for this assistance (use the chipin link on the right side of the page to donate securely)! Thanks!

Please post a comment if you can help!

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Another sighting: Forest Village Apartments

At approximately 10:30 AM today, Sweetie was seen at the playground within Forest Village Apartments. By the time our volunteers arrived, she had disappeared. We desperately need local volunteers who can help out! Please leave a comment if you can!

Potential new sighting, Marbury Drive

We received a call that a man saw Sweetie around 5:20 pm, traveling north in a ditch along Marbury Dr near the intersection with Senator Ave. This is in a similar area to the Kirtland Road sightings. We had the tracker out again to verify the sighting and it is Sweetie!

Our girl is always on the move. If you live nearby and are out and about (within 3 miles of all the sightings) PLEASE print a few fliers (on the right hand side there is a link) and hang them in plastic page protectors. It would help immensely.

And please keep calling in those sightings!

Saturday, February 27, 2010

Den? We hope so!

Sam came out to track from the Forest Village sighting--our hopes are high that we may have found Sweetie's den! There is a large property with a few abandoned homes on it, along with a buddy for Sweetie to hang out with and food and water a short walk away.

We've set up a feeding station and a camera, and are hoping to finally catch a picture of our girl in the area!

Thanks--again--to the folks who accompanied the tracker, and to our friend Sam!

Potential sighting, Forestville Road

We received another call of a potential sighting at Sunoco on Forestville Road across from Forest Village. She was seen with a resident beagle at 6am Friday morning, and also sometime on Thursday morning. Volunteers went to check out the area.

We are also bringing the tracker back out to try and determine where Sweetie may be hanging out these days, since she's likely left Kirtland.

Possible sighting Suitland Road and Southern Ave

We received a call that possibly puts Sweetie on the Md side of the intersection of Suitland Rd and Southern Ave this morning. This is all the information we have received about this sighting. If you are in that area, please keep your eyes out!

Meanwhile, we continue to monitor the situation at Kirtland Road, as she has been sighted there repeatedly.

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Sweetie is still at Kirtland NOT Forestville

So, a wonderful volunteer/donor had Sam and Salsa come out again. We learned that Sweetie has NOT been in the Forestville Road area of the recent sightings. She is still hanging out on Kirtland. We are hoping to learn more about her habits in order to trap her. Stay tuned for our "she's been found" post, hopefully soon!!

Monday, February 22, 2010

New Sighting - Overnight

A call came in that Sweetie may have seen on Forestville Rd at the intersection of Suitland Pkwy traveling on the western side of the road. The caller saw a brown and white dog, but could provide no other details.

Saturday, February 20, 2010

The tracker is on the move!

A generous donor has again brought the tracker, Sam, out to help locate Sweetie. They are on the move at a brisk pace, hot on Sweetie's trail!

Here is a map of the area Sweetie's recently travelled.

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Kirtland Ave sightings confirmed

Sam and Salsa confirmed that Sweetie has been hanging out on Kirtland Ave in Forestville. She has been seen there 3 times this week (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday). We are working hard to try and keep her in that area so we can get her back safe and sound! If you see her please call IMMEDIATELY so we can respond.

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

New sightings on Kirtland Ave 2/16 and 2/17!

We received a call today reporting two sightings on Kirtland Avenue; Sweetie was seen today at 7:30 am sitting in a yard and yesterday at 11:00 pm looking through trash.

Sam with Pure Gold Pet Trackers was on the ground able to respond. Sam's tracking dog, Salsa, picked up Sweetie's scent! We're hopeful that our girl stays put even though the trash that likely attracted her is now gone.

Please come out and help hang fliers this weekend, so we can get our girl home safe and sound! We will be meeting both Saturday AND Sunday at the Burger King in Penn Crossing at 11:30: 5730 Silver Hill Road. Please bring copies of the flier and the business cards with you--you can download both from the blog on the right-hand side of the page. Thanks!

Sweetie in the PG Post and the Sentinel

You can read about the search for Sweetie in the PG Post and in the Sentinel!

Chipin to help fund the costs of the search!

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped with the Sweetie search--today marked one month since Sweetie escaped from her foster home. We are continuing to receive regular sightings, so we remain hopeful that Sweetie will be brought back to safety.

To those who've previously donated--thank you! Your donations help to cover tracking fees, but also go toward the cost of copying, plastic page protectors, staple guns, and tape.

We are continuing to work to raise funds as the search goes on--please donate to help us continue the search! Thank you!

More about tracking Sweetie--in today's Washington Post!

You can read a Washington Post article about Sam's tracking and Sweetie here.

Sightings confirmed and a new potential sighting--but still need help

Sam and Salsa came out and confirmed that Sweetie had been in the Seton Way neighborhood and was also on Forest Run!

We also received a phone call (last night, 2/14/1,0 around 10:45 PM) of another Sweetie sighting on Kirtland Ave, which is just south of the Target off Marlboro Pike. Please keep your eyes out and call us if you see her; she's definitely out in the open more with all the snow piles, so it's a good time to find her!

We still need lots of help! We are gearing up for a huge flyering push this coming weekend February 20 and 21:

WAYS YOU CAN HELP:
  • Drop off supplies (fliers, business cards, sheet protectors, staple guns, staple refills, tape, etc.) at Petmac DC (Tenleytown) or Dog Paws (Arlington) during this week to help support the search . If you are not near those areas, please email me (address below) or leave a comment so we can arrange a way to get these supplies to us.
  • Help flyer next weekend - we'll be out on Saturday and Sunday. We will be providing transportation from MD, VA, and DC for those who don't have cars or prefer not to drive.
  • Help transport volunteers from DC-MD-VA to the search site.
  • Donate to help support the search (click on the chipin widget to the right on this page)
INITIAL PLAN FOR THE WEEKEND:
We will be meeting at the Burger King (5730 Silver Hill Road, District Heights, MD‎) at 11:30am on Saturday and Sunday. We plan to finish up around 3:30 and have you back in DC-MD-VA by 4:00pm.

SIGHTINGS: 02/10/20 and 02/11/10

We received two sighting reports today: one was a reported sighting of Sweetie yesterday, near Seton Way. The other was for a sighting today, around 12:15 PM, from a gentleman that believes he saw Sweetie walking on Forest Run, off of Marlboro Pike, heading into the woods.

Our girl is hungry and on the move again! We still need assistance fliering the area and checking feeding stations--if you can join the effort, please let us know!

Monday, February 8, 2010

New sighting today 2/8/10

Our girl is definitely out and about! We had another sighting today around 11:30 AM. She was traveling on Route 4 south/east towards Brooks Ave. When the driver turned around to try and get her, she'd already disappeared.

We are very excited that she found somewhere to rest that keeps her out of the storm, and that she's being seen and is out and about!

Please call us with any sightings; continued sightings are critical to finding Sweetie. We really appreciate and thank everyone calling in sightings; we will bring her home safe!

Some volunteers went out today to check feeding stations and respond to sightings, but it is very hard to get around, and we weren't able to cover everywhere. If anybody lives in the area, or has 4WD and can get around to hang fliers tomorrow, please comment to let us know.

Sunday, February 7, 2010

SIGHTINGS: 02/07/10, 11:00 am

We had two sightings today--now that the storm is over, our girl is hungry and on the move! The first sighting was of of Marlboro Pike, and the second was off of Suitland Road. The sighting off of Suitland Road turned out to be a different dog, but we think it's fairly likely that the Marlboro Pike sighting was our girl, since it's an area that she's been before.

We had awesome volunteers who went out yesterday--from Virginia!!!--to check the feeding stations, and we had a volunteer out at the stations and the sighting locations for today.

Thanks, all, for continuing to help bring Sweetie home!

Saturday, February 6, 2010

Sweetie on MSNBC . . . again!

MSNBC has posted another story about Sweetie--we really appreciate their interest in the search for Sweetie and hope that it helps to generate more sightings!

Tracker verifies sightings--Sweetie is still in District Heights/Suitland

Sam with Pure Gold Pet Trackers came out today to verify the two sightings from yesterday. Sweetie appears to still be in the District Heights/Suitland area, and not in Upper Marlboro.

We're setting up a lot of food to help this girl get through the storm--but we need help to spread the word as soon as we can get out there! Please join us!

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

SIGHTING: 02/03/10, Morningside neighborhood

We received a sighting call at 8 pm that put Sweetie in the Morningside neighborhood. We are hopeful that this is our girl and that we can once again follow her track and bring her back to safety--before the snow storm!

We're not sure if Sweetie is in the District Heights area still, or in Upper Marlboro, but we're hoping that the tracker can help determine that for us.

Please join the search effort to bring Sweetie home!

Possible Sighting in Upper Marlboro, MD

We received a call of a possible sighting this morning around 10-10:30 in Upper Marlboro, MD. If this is our girl, she is about 10 miles from where she started out. We are hoping to get a tracker out tomorrow to verify that the sighting is Sweetie. We are also still monitoring feeding stations set up around where she originally went missing and has been sighted.

Fliering Event This Weekend!!

Monday, February 1, 2010

Need daytime fliering help--can you help?

We need to expand the area fliered to a three-mile radius from the last sighting. We need a lot of help to do this--can join us? If yes, please leave a comment!

Sunday, January 31, 2010

Thank you to everyone who came out today--or helped from behind the scenes

We had a great turnout today and were able to get a lot of fliers up. We had about ten volunteers come out, in spite of the weather! Many of those who came out to help came from Virginia--from Arlington or Falls Chuch.

We expanded the area fliered south to Andrews Airforce base. We also fliered in the area north of Marlboro Pike. To be safe, we recovered some of the areas we've fliered in the past and also handed out business cards at the area shopping centers.

We also checked the feeding stations and looked for Sweetie's prints in the snow--we saw a lot of prints, but most of them were for cats rather than dogs.

Hopefully we'll get a sighting call soon as a result of today's efforts--and then we'll be able to bring Sweetie back to safety!

Here's a pic of a few of our canine and human helpers from today!

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Fliering event is still meeting at 11--dress warmly!

We are still planning on meeting at 11 to flier. Please dress warmly. Hope to see you there!

Sweetie In The News!!!

Sweetie has made the news!!

Now we just have to bring her home to help her celebrate her new found fame! Please plan to join us on Sunday at 11am for a fliering push at the Burger King parking lot in the Penn Crossing shopping center. The address is:

5730 Silver Hill Road, District Heights, MD‎

After a long night of monitoring a feeding station that Sweetie seems to be frequenting, we closed up the humane trap with no luck. We are hoping that with the fliering push and new sitings we can bring this pup in from out of the cold.

Sighting and Trap

Monday afternoon we received a call from a group of kids in the Marlboro Pike area that said that they had a dog that fit Sweetie's description in hand. Several volunteers rushed to the site, however, it seems the dog slipped away. The good news is that this is the same area that Sweetie has recently been tracked to, so another sighting is a great thing. The bad news is she is still missing and needs help more than ever!

We have also set and been monitoring a humane trap in the area with the hope that Sweetie is still there. In the meantime, we could really use your help to bring this little girl home before the snowfall on Saturday!

Flyering Event This Weekend!!

One of the biggest impacts we can make to get Sweetie home as soon as possible is to flyer! This weekend, January 30th and 31st, we are planning a flyering event. More information to come soon, but we hope that you will dedicate some time for Sweetie this weekend and come and join us!!

Monday, January 25, 2010

Sightings from Friday & Sunday

A sighting from yesterday was called in to the phone line: at about 11am, Sweetie was spotted near the community center at 5883 Suitland Road. This goes along with other sightings on Sunday.

And a fliering volunteer reported that while fliering along Suitland and Silver Hill on Sunday afternoon, a younger girl asked her if she had lost a brown and white dog. She had see such a dog, small "but not too much" with long ears, at her elementary school on Friday. The dog was barking at the children, who were scaref of the dog. That school is William Beans Elementary School, at 5108 Dianna Drive in Suitland.

Sunday, January 24, 2010

SIGHTING: 01/24/10, 2 pm

We had volunteers on the ground throughout the day, continuing to flier the areas through which the track went yesterday. We were able to cover most of the area, and also had volunteers at the area shopping centers and the metro stations, distributing info about Sweetie. Thanks to all those who came out to help!

Largely thanks to this effort, we had a sighting of Sweetie today at the intersection of Brooks and Penn Ave--yay! This is the same area that the track covered yesterday, and Salsa (the tracking dog) picked up on Sweetie's scent in this area today, too.

We've set up a trap and need assistance monitoring it. Can you help? Please leave a comment if you can assist!

Thanks!

Updates from the track

The track is underway and so far our girl seems to be spending most of her time in Prince George's County, crossing back and forth across Pennsylvania Avenue.

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help on Saturday--and who followed along behind the path of the track. We were able to knock out some good fliering this way!

Sightings were of other dogs--not Sweetie

We received a sighting of a beagle at 16th & U. The beagle was being walked by a boy, on a rope. We checked the sighting out and while there was a beagle, it wasn't Sweetie.

We received several sightings of a dog running loose wearing a blue collar. The dog was seen around Savannah and 23rd--but one of our volunteers saw this dog and believes it was a pit mix, and not Sweetie.

Thank you for calling--please keep those calls coming if you think you've seen Sweetie!

We're going to have the tracker come back out to help us figure out where our girl headed last.

Encouraging Developments

After hours of canvassing while fliering, beginning in the area of the cemetary, we turned up nearly a dozen Sweetie sightings!

All are from yesterday, and they show that Sweetie has crossed over from SE DC into Prince Georges County.

The sightings all occurred in the triangular area bordered by Pennsylvania Ave (the DC border), Southern Ave (bordering the cemetary), and Quinn.

These sightings will be plotted on the map later, so check back for that and more details.

A Little About Sweetie

Sweetie is such a great little beagle girl who has had a very tough life. She was found as a stray in Ritchie County West Virginia and animal control there put her in the shelter. Even in the shelter, Sweetie was very quiet and calm and very gentle with the staff there. She especially loved when children came to the shelter and would love to cuddle in their laps. She even enjoyed cuddling up with the cats at the shelter!

Ritchie County Humane Society is a very high kill shelter with many beagles so Homeward Trails wanted to get Sweetie out right away. Many people wanted to adopt her in the DC area, but right before she was to be adopted, we found out she was going to have puppies! So Sweetie lived at the shelter until all of her pups were weaned and adopted. Finally, Sweetie was able to come to the DC area for a first-time dog owner. Sweetie loved to learn how to live in her new house and learned all her manners very quickly - including housebreaking! Unfortunately for Sweetie, her new family decided that they did not have time to even take Sweetie outside to go potty so they returned her to Homeward Trails. Sweetie is such a sweet and quiet girl and so well behaved that many people wanted to adopt her! Even after all that she has been through, Sweetie still does not have a mean bone in her body. She was named perfectly.

Sweetie is so close to finding her forever home - but being a beagle, she found an interesting scent and decided to check it out. Now poor Sweetie is lost! This poor little girl deserves her happy ending. Won't you help us find Sweetie?

Sweetie is lost!

Sweetie, a sweet, but shy beagle, was lost from her foster's home this morning. The foster is away and we must act fast! We are trying to heavily flyer the neighborhood this afternoon. Please join us!
