Thank you to everyone who came out today--or helped from behind the scenes

We had a great turnout today and were able to get a lot of fliers up. We had about ten volunteers come out, in spite of the weather! Many of those who came out to help came from Virginia--from Arlington or Falls Chuch.

We expanded the area fliered south to Andrews Airforce base. We also fliered in the area north of Marlboro Pike. To be safe, we recovered some of the areas we've fliered in the past and also handed out business cards at the area shopping centers.

We also checked the feeding stations and looked for Sweetie's prints in the snow--we saw a lot of prints, but most of them were for cats rather than dogs.

Hopefully we'll get a sighting call soon as a result of today's efforts--and then we'll be able to bring Sweetie back to safety!

Here's a pic of a few of our canine and human helpers from today!

Sweetie In The News!!!

Sweetie has made the news!!

Now we just have to bring her home to help her celebrate her new found fame! Please plan to join us on Sunday at 11am for a fliering push at the Burger King parking lot in the Penn Crossing shopping center. The address is:

5730 Silver Hill Road, District Heights, MD‎

After a long night of monitoring a feeding station that Sweetie seems to be frequenting, we closed up the humane trap with no luck. We are hoping that with the fliering push and new sitings we can bring this pup in from out of the cold.

Sighting and Trap

Monday afternoon we received a call from a group of kids in the Marlboro Pike area that said that they had a dog that fit Sweetie's description in hand. Several volunteers rushed to the site, however, it seems the dog slipped away. The good news is that this is the same area that Sweetie has recently been tracked to, so another sighting is a great thing. The bad news is she is still missing and needs help more than ever!

We have also set and been monitoring a humane trap in the area with the hope that Sweetie is still there. In the meantime, we could really use your help to bring this little girl home before the snowfall on Saturday!

Flyering Event This Weekend!!

One of the biggest impacts we can make to get Sweetie home as soon as possible is to flyer! This weekend, January 30th and 31st, we are planning a flyering event. More information to come soon, but we hope that you will dedicate some time for Sweetie this weekend and come and join us!!

Sightings from Friday & Sunday

A sighting from yesterday was called in to the phone line: at about 11am, Sweetie was spotted near the community center at 5883 Suitland Road. This goes along with other sightings on Sunday.

And a fliering volunteer reported that while fliering along Suitland and Silver Hill on Sunday afternoon, a younger girl asked her if she had lost a brown and white dog. She had see such a dog, small "but not too much" with long ears, at her elementary school on Friday. The dog was barking at the children, who were scaref of the dog. That school is William Beans Elementary School, at 5108 Dianna Drive in Suitland.

SIGHTING: 01/24/10, 2 pm

We had volunteers on the ground throughout the day, continuing to flier the areas through which the track went yesterday. We were able to cover most of the area, and also had volunteers at the area shopping centers and the metro stations, distributing info about Sweetie. Thanks to all those who came out to help!

Largely thanks to this effort, we had a sighting of Sweetie today at the intersection of Brooks and Penn Ave--yay! This is the same area that the track covered yesterday, and Salsa (the tracking dog) picked up on Sweetie's scent in this area today, too.

We've set up a trap and need assistance monitoring it. Can you help? Please leave a comment if you can assist!

Thanks!

Updates from the track

The track is underway and so far our girl seems to be spending most of her time in Prince George's County, crossing back and forth across Pennsylvania Avenue.

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help on Saturday--and who followed along behind the path of the track. We were able to knock out some good fliering this way!

Sightings were of other dogs--not Sweetie

We received a sighting of a beagle at 16th & U. The beagle was being walked by a boy, on a rope. We checked the sighting out and while there was a beagle, it wasn't Sweetie.

We received several sightings of a dog running loose wearing a blue collar. The dog was seen around Savannah and 23rd--but one of our volunteers saw this dog and believes it was a pit mix, and not Sweetie.

Thank you for calling--please keep those calls coming if you think you've seen Sweetie!

We're going to have the tracker come back out to help us figure out where our girl headed last.

Encouraging Developments

After hours of canvassing while fliering, beginning in the area of the cemetary, we turned up nearly a dozen Sweetie sightings!

All are from yesterday, and they show that Sweetie has crossed over from SE DC into Prince Georges County.

The sightings all occurred in the triangular area bordered by Pennsylvania Ave (the DC border), Southern Ave (bordering the cemetary), and Quinn.

These sightings will be plotted on the map later, so check back for that and more details.

A Little About Sweetie

Sweetie is such a great little beagle girl who has had a very tough life. She was found as a stray in Ritchie County West Virginia and animal control there put her in the shelter. Even in the shelter, Sweetie was very quiet and calm and very gentle with the staff there. She especially loved when children came to the shelter and would love to cuddle in their laps. She even enjoyed cuddling up with the cats at the shelter!

Ritchie County Humane Society is a very high kill shelter with many beagles so Homeward Trails wanted to get Sweetie out right away. Many people wanted to adopt her in the DC area, but right before she was to be adopted, we found out she was going to have puppies! So Sweetie lived at the shelter until all of her pups were weaned and adopted. Finally, Sweetie was able to come to the DC area for a first-time dog owner. Sweetie loved to learn how to live in her new house and learned all her manners very quickly - including housebreaking! Unfortunately for Sweetie, her new family decided that they did not have time to even take Sweetie outside to go potty so they returned her to Homeward Trails. Sweetie is such a sweet and quiet girl and so well behaved that many people wanted to adopt her! Even after all that she has been through, Sweetie still does not have a mean bone in her body. She was named perfectly.

Sweetie is so close to finding her forever home - but being a beagle, she found an interesting scent and decided to check it out. Now poor Sweetie is lost! This poor little girl deserves her happy ending. Won't you help us find Sweetie?

Sweetie is lost!

Sweetie, a sweet, but shy beagle, was lost from her foster's home this morning. The foster is away and we must act fast! We are trying to heavily flyer the neighborhood this afternoon. Please join us!
